Evening was falling when this mail came in. “I work at a children’s hospital. For some weeks now, we’ve been looking after a seriously ill little boy who will probably die soon. We were chatting to his parents today, when they mentioned how much they would like to have some pictures of the family, so they can remember the time they had with Noah. It would be wonderful if we could organize a shoot for the family as soon as possible.” Steven Smith (http://sgsmithphotography.com/), one of our ‘angel photographers’ as I like to call them, was prepared to help take the all-important photos of the child for these incredibly brave parents. Intimate pictures of their Noah, who is already developing his wings and will soon be flying up and away towards the stars. The fact that it was quite a long distance to travel and that he would have to set out early next morning was unimportant. If he was needed, he was needed: and that was all there was to it. Everything else was unimportant, he reassured me. And in this case, he really would have to pull himself together because he hardly speaks German and would have to communicate in English, using his hands and feet if need be. But he’d manage it somehow, he said.

And so he set off to see Noah, just seven months old and suffering form an incurable form of muscular disease. On the way back home, he called. It had been a very emotional day, but had gone well. And if I needed him again somewhere, he would happily do it again. Today, I’m so proud of my photographers. I know how hard their heart must be beating when they open a door to find a family in a complete state of emergency. And despite their nervousness and fear, they go in and make a parents’ dream come true. That takes a lot of courage and a big, big heart. So: many, many thanks, dear Stephen, for everything. Thank you so much for being on board.” And then we get the feedback from the hospital: “…Stephen Smith’s photo shoot with Noah had been a very positive experience for the parents. He was very professional and able to empathize closely with Noah’s mother and father, which had created a very comfortable atmosphere all round. I would recommend him to other parents.” How beautiful, how very wonderful it is to receive this kind of feedback, and to know that the nursing staff have actually taken the time to send it.
Thank you! That at such a difficult time you were able to create an atmosphere in the hospital room which the nursing staff called “comfortable”: it really is very, very touching. Thank you, Stephen, from the bottom of my heart.

Just a few days later, I received another mail from the hospital. Little Noah had died, had flown up and away. Take care, little star: all our thoughts are with you and your family. For me, it is still a miracle that the nurse managed to get in touch with us just in time and that Noah’s parents can now take those intimate, precious pictures with them on the difficult journey they now have to make without their precious child. “The pictures turned out beautifully, just as we had hoped.
Thank you so much for giving us parents the most beautiful thing that remains after such a tragic fate, namely memories,” is what Noah’s parents wrote. To Noah’s parents: our thoughts are with you and a candle burns for you and your little star.
